3 days til Super Bowl

Familiar faces around me
Laughter fills the air
Your loving grace surrounds me
Everybody's here
Turn it up, turn it up, turn it up, turn it up
Meet me at Mary's place, we're gonna have a party
Bruce Springsteen

So I have been limping around this week, much more than normally, after getting landing a little funny playing volleyball on Sunday. It has kept me from doing much cardio, it hasn't kept me from working out. Much more sit ups, arms, shoulder, chest and back than normal, but no treadmill, no mall, and no pick up volleyball. One thing that sucks bad about getting older is the fact that it seems to take forever to recoup from an injury and you almost feel that these injuries will stick with you for the rest of your life. I had a sore shoulder from August thru November and now this. I never got injuries sitting on my couch, but the activity and mostly the playing volleyball has brought my such joy these last couple years that I can not imagine being without it. So if it means I limp, or I am sore in places I shouldn't be sore, or I creak and crackle when I stand up....Screw it it's well worth it.

A little bit about food. I have been to the supermarket every day this week in preparation for our Super Bowl party. But I have made a very conscious decision to eat less this week, to help prepare for Sunday. Taking joy from food is not a bad thing when done on occasion and when you realize it and prepare and recover the way you know you should. I will never be the person who can say no to good times and parties. I think I have a little too much hedonism in me :) I am, however a person who realizes that calories are like a charge on a credit card and if you are going to spend extra on the weekend be cheap the week before and really tighten the belt afterwards.

So with all that being said I hope everyone has a wonderful Super Bowl. Go Cardinal's for Kristin and Owner Bill Bidwell who is a Georgetown Prep alum like me. I saw The Reader this week and just have Benjamin Button left on the list of Best picture Nominations. I liked it okay, and am sure it was a tremendous book that lost a lot in the transition to the screen. Kate Winslet is excellent and very naked throughout much of the film. It probably doesn't deserve to be in the top 5 but is well above average.

Another weekend down and nothing too major or exciting here in Madison. I stayed home Friday and went to sleep at like 9 pm. Went out Saturday and saw a couple mediocre bands and had a few beers with some buddies. Sunday I saw Revolutionary Road in the morning and played a volleyball at night. It was another wicked cold weekend with temps in the negatives.
Revolutionary Road is a torturous tale of suburban life and the misery of lost dreams. Not one happy person in this movie. Excellently acted but not fun by any measure. I also saw Frost/Nixon last week and enjoyed the re-telling of this time and history around these interviews.
We are in slightly over our heads in the winter volleyball league we are in. The rec league didn't fill and we decided to play in the competitive league where I feel old, slow, and not much of a jumper. It's still fun and it will make us better, but it's a powerful form of volleyball. And to top it off I twisted my knee jumping at the net and am hobbling around today :(
Sunday is our biggest annual party. I'll post some pics next week of the food and packed house and if you can get to Madison you are of course invited. I'll also post the Super Bowl quiz we do so anyone who wants can play along. Have a great week. This week will mark the end of my keeping an online food log for awhile. It has helped but is time consuming to record and type in here. I'll keep the exercise log going

Please let it be spring

Somewhere along the line we lost the horizon,
I've been looking 'round, up and down
Nowhere there, nowhere there
Someday I hope we can find the horizon

Nothing really new or exciting to point out. I enjoyed watching the inauguration most of Tuesday. No matter how you feel about the election, you have to admit that the excitement generated and the crowds were like no recent inauguration. And one thing no one can debate is when it comes to throwing parties the Dem's get a much cooler group of musicians.
I spent Tuesday night watching the Terps win a bball game vs UVA (sorry Pam), Wednesday night playing Team Trivia at Byrds pub with my new friends Sara and Jon, and Thursday night home on the couch laughing at 30 Rock like I do every Thursday. Team Trivia is an interesting concept that they use to draw people into local bars. It's a 20 question quiz, with a wide array of trivia. There were about 20 teams competing. We were in second place going into the final question, and I get a dream category Oscar winners. The question was what best picture winner of the last ten years was also the name of a 1941 comedy starring Ronald Reagan? we whiffed. We named nine of the last 11 winners (missing Chicago and American Beauty) and then proceeded to name a movie that wasn't even a Best Picture winner and came out 12 years ago. "As Good as it Gets" UGH!!

Conundrum

I can't feel nothing but this chain that binds me
Lost track of how far I've gone
How far I've gone, how high I've climbed
On my back's a sixty pound stone
On my shoulder a half mile line
Come on up for the rising
Come on up, lay your hands in mine
Come on up for the rising
Come on up for the rising tonight
Bruce Springsteen
My life used to be really mundane, now it's only kinda mundane. I used to stay home alot. Now I really try to find cool things to do, see music, games, and not be tied down the fears I used to have and still have to a point. Anyway the reason I tell you this is because part of being out more and being more social is you deal with some new problems that you didn't face sitting in your house. Saturday I attended the Barrymore Theater's Holiday party. There was free beer which isn't really an issue for me but I will drink in a social setting where I never drink at home. So over the four hours I had 5 beers. Probably an extra 600 calories...thats the good news :)
I was faced with a 25 yard pot luck table that had so many foods in my sweet spot that I did what you would expect.... Grabbed a plate and tried to fit as much on it as possible without making a spectacle of myself. There was jambalaya, meatballs, roasted potatoes, beef with broccoli, some chicken thing, some doritos with guac, and homemade choc chip cookies. I have no idea how much I ate or how many calories I consumed. None whatsoever. Now I'm not a guy who takes much pleasure in eating in front of others, so you would think I would enjoy my plate of food and beers then relax and watch the music. I tried but for a good half hour that pot luck table kept calling me like the sirens leading the ships to their doom. I went back and got more. Sunday wasn't a whole lot better :(
Saturday:
Breakfast:Turkey sandwich with lettuce tomatoe and pickles.
carrots, and pretzels
Lunch: Baked scoops with left over taco meat and salsa
Dinner Pot Luck Bonanza
Sunday
10 am medium popcorn at the movies
3pm a few beers with my volleyball teammates
8pm 1 chicken breast, 2 lt buns, hot sauce, 150 cal chips
exercise log
Saturday
Situps
Sunday
Situps
1 hr volleyball
So I figured I would pay for my sins on the treadmill today and for the first time in my life did one full hour on a treadmill. I'm sure alot of people have done this, but I sweated, and huffed and was glad as hell when it hit one hour.
I saw Defiance ( not very good) and The Wrestler (okay, but not upto the hype) over the last few days. Congrats to my loyal reading AZ Cards fan!!! Two weeks to super bowl and we throw one heck of a party if you have any desire to come to Madison. Peace, Jim

I know I said I wasn't going to bitch about the winter here....but come on....this is ridiculously bad. The temps dipped last night to almost negative 30, my house is making very strange sounds, my heating bill is going to fund the bailout of citibank, my dogs have just decided that the downstairs is their personal bathroom because after ten steps outside their paws are frozen, and just for fun tonite it is supposed to snow. I really need to reassess this whole living in Wisconsin thing. I have left the house once in the last two days... Jacky drove me to see Gran Torino. Did I mention that I have become a giant wuss when it comes to driving in this crap as well. Anyway the movie is excellent. Funny, touching, sad and thoughtful. Oscar worthy and on top of my list of Movies for 2008, which now looks like this:
Gran Torino
Doubt
Milk
Slumdog Millionaire
Roman de Garre
I still need to see Frost/Nixon, Revolutionary Road, The Wrestler, and The Reader. As for the people pushing either Wall-E or Batman for inclusion in best picture talk....No. Wall-E was cute, and with a good message but was not even pixars best offering. And Batman while great for its genre was to me silly and pointless and way too over the top.

BRRRRR

silver trees and a whispering breeze
are my sight and my sound
the thought of heaven couldn’t drag me from the path

The Sunday's

It's tuesday night here in Madison and the weather reporters have big grin's on their face cause they lead every newscast with stories like "coldest days in a decade" and "unsafe wind chills in the negative 40's." The temperatures between now and saturday morning are expected to drop and drop some more. Lows in the negative teens, and highs around negative five. It's going to be hard to leave the house for the next 48 hours, and awfully hard to find a reason to actually want to leave. I put in two strong days of exercise and good eating in advance of this weather and hope to get out, but they are calling for snow on top of the cold so it is anyone's guess when that will be.

I also want to talk about two really good things. My new favorite movie for the year is 'Doubt', and I will be saluting one of my all-time favorite cds with this weeks quotes The cd is Static and Silence by the band The Sunday's. The album was released in 1997 and they have been on "hiatus" ever since.

I figured today would be a good day to break out my all time favortie summer song. I had a light day execising yesterday, mostly because because I was sore from four hours of volleyball. However, I wish I had pushed off the light day til today, cause it is of course snowing.

Already a couple inches on the ground with snow expected to continue throughout the day :(
I have been doing some para-legal work on the side, mostly to keep my brain functioning. Yesterday I put together a motion to supress the in court identification of a suspect tainted by a suggestive out of court identification. Sound like fun? Go ahead ask me a question about Neil v. Biggers or State v. Wade. I think it makes me much happier to sell a Bob Marley t-shirt.

So as I walk around the mall each day it occurs to me that I have really spent much less time in a mall than most people. Partly cause I'm not really a shopper, partly because walking around the mall with all those people kind of scared me in an agoraphobic sort of way. So when I say I have never in the last decade eaten in a mall food court I am telling the truth. The food court at my mall is truly a buffet of everything that makes us fat. I mean where else can you get an Arbys sandwich, McDonalds fries, a Slice of pizza, and a DQ blizzard as your meal.

Happy New Year:

As I alluded to previously, I am going to switch up a little bit the direction of my blog for the first two months of this year. I am going to keep a daily food log and daily exercise log. This is 99.9% for me to keep motivated and more so for the accountability I was lacking through the holiday season. And although ice, wind and cold is a damn good excuse for staying home, watching tv, never leaving the house and eating what you want it's not an excuse I plan to invoke anymore.

I have a particularly unimpressive history when it comes to keeping food logs. I know that they are extremely beneficial, and I know they help you cut down on what you are eating. Here's the thing I've kept them in the past never lasting more than a week or two, I have turned in food logs to doctors and nutritionists that I have tried to fill in two weeks in 10 minutes before an appointment and I have basically lied mostly to myself when I have kept them. Any way my promise to you guys is every morsel of food that goes into my mouth will be recorded here and while I am willing to lie to myself there's no way I'm lying to you.

Since I haven't done an update in I think the longest time since I started let's recap the last ten days. We came home Christmas evening to discover our furnace wasn't working. 58degrees and dropping. A couple extra blankets to make it through the night and and the repair guy got us up and running the following afternoon which made two shivering greyhounds very happy. Madison,Wisconsin gets on average 45 inches of snow in a winter. we got 42+ in December. It sucked for business, sucked for getting to the gym and volleyball, sucked for walking the dogs, and sucked for mine and most people's general disposition, but I'm not really complaining (yes I am).

Between Christmas and New Years my schedule was basically try to watch every bowl game imaginable, some college hoops, and a little NFL. I got in two game nights at friends houses, saw no live music, kissed my wife at midnight and then drove her very drunk butt home at 3:30 am.
So what's on tap for 2009?
Here the stuff I know right now. I'll be at Fitness ridge from March 22nd through April 5th. Jacky will be there from Feb 15th thru the 22nd. I am attending the Mountain West basketball tournament, ASD trade show, and a festive weekend with friends including quite a few of my really good friends from high school the preceding week in Vegas. I'm excited that I have tickets to see Brett Dennen in Madison on February 28th and Sara Bareilles March 2nd at a very, very small venue Chicago. We have our annual Super Bowl party on February 1st it it will be the best and biggest yet. If you happen to be near Madison or want to come to Madison for that or any other reason let me know. As far as exercise, mall walking, gym workouts, lots of sit ups, and of course 3-4 days of volleyball a week.
Exercise January 5th
6:45 200 sit-ups
7:35 29 minutes of walking at the mall ( i am officially old)
8:20 26 minutes on the treadmill and 200 sit ups
Food log
1 nutrition bar
1/2 grapefruit
1 orange
some pineapple
Lunch 2oz ham on rye with mustard, carrots, 100 cal pretzels
Dinner 1.5 chicken breasts, baked potato w/ salsa, salad
Snack 100 calorie pop corn
I hope everyone had a happy and wonderful new year and we should all strive to make 2009 as fantastic as it can be. Give me love, Give me peace, Give me hope, Jim
